Company History and Philosophy

The business was established in 1953 by E. Marvin Slaughter (1926-1987) and has operated out of a warehouse location in Norfolk, VA since 1955.  In 1959, a second location was established in Richmond, VA by Milton (Jake) Raynor, Jr. and the business operated as a partnership until the death of Mr. Raynor in 1969.  The business thrived throughout the 70's and 80's even in the midst of increasing competition and consolidation.  Upon the death of Mr. Slaughter in 1987, the business was re-organized to ensure its continuance and success.  In 1991, the present management structure was formed with second generation family ownership and management representation.

Southern Tile Distributors has won numerous awards for sales performance from most of its product group manufacturers.  The company gained significant market share since 1953 and it has earned the respect of its customers and competitors alike.  We take great pride in this reputation...a "southern" tradition of excellence embraced daily by our staff.  Our customers continue to recognize the overall value and savings we offer through convenience, selection, efficiency, dependability and personalized service.  We will strive to meet the challenges of the future with the characteristics of our founding father: honesty, integrity, fairness, respect and leadership in our dealings with manufacturers, customers and employees.
